Brazil, International Seminar: “University, Entrepreneurship and Innovation”

The seminar was organized by Prof. José Manoel Carvalho de Mello, Adviser for Innovation Policies to the rector of Fluminense Federal University; Researcher from the Nuclei of Studies in Knowledge, Innovation and Work, Fluminense Federal University. The seminar took place on the 6th November 2007, in the School of Engineering , Fluminense Federal University Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The seminar started with a speech by José Mello about entrepreneurship and innovation in Brazilian universities. Afterwards two panels followed.

The first panel; was on international experiences, with three speakers:
• Entrepreneurship and Innovation at Cuban Universities
Jorge Núñez Jover (Pró-Reitor de Pesquisa da Universidade de Havana)

• Innovation Management at Italian Universities
Davide Diamantini (Universidade de Milano-Biccoca, Professor e Vice-Director of the Department of Research in Quality of Life at Information Society)

• Technology-based firm creation in the Regional Innovation System of Catalan, Spain (videoconference)
Josep Piqué (President of the Network for Science and Technology parks of Catalan, Spain)

The second panel; was on Brazilian experiences, with three speakers:

• Entrepreneurship at universities
Guilherme Ary Plonski (Scientific Coordinator of the Nuclei of Policy and Management of Technology, State University of São Paulo)

• Competitivity, technological capacity, and incremental innovation :The role of the university.
Ângela Uller (Vice-Rector of Research and Graduate Studies of the Rio de Janeiro Federal university)

• Academic Excellence and the Market: Virtuous Circle?
Antônio José Junqueira Botelho (Research Coordinator, Nuclei of Studies in Entrepreneurship, Catholic University)

Between the two panels, Henry Etzkowitz delivered a key note speech on Entrepreneurial Universities. The seminar ended with a speech by Sergio Mecena (Coordinator of the Technological Incubator of Fluminense Federal University) about entrepreneurship and innovation at Fluminense Federal University

In the open session, representatives from the private sector as well as the rector of the university participated.
